On April 4, 2022, the government of the Republic of Chile deposited its instrument of adherence to the Madrid Protocol, thus becoming member 111 of the Madrid System.
This country is the last in the southern cone to join the Madrid System, which now covers 127 countries. Said protocol will be in force as of July 4, 2022.
It is as of that date that trademark owners in Chile will be able to protect their trademarks in all the remaining territories of the Madrid System, by filing a single application, in one language, and paying a single set of fees.
For an economy like Chile’s, which is export-oriented, this opens up new possibilities for businesses of all kinds of expansion, development and growth.
This accession also highlights Chile’s commitment to the global IP system and the country’s determination to become a recognized innovation hub. In addition to continuing to strengthen the position of the Madrid System as a fundamental component of trademark protection on a global scale.
