EU Intellectual Property rights and Brexit. Update

The recent departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union on February 1, 2020, has no immediate impact on EU wide intellectual property rights, which will continue to have an effect on this country. The European Patent legislation is not affected by the exit of the United Kingdom from the EU. This scenario is what we already contemplated in our previous communication in relation to the first date announced for Brexit 29.03.2019.

As already reported, a transition period is now open until 1 January 2021, during which both European Union Trademarks and Community Designs will retain their effects in the United Kingdom.

We will keep you informed about what the situation will be from next January 1st, as well as of the actions that will have to be taken to obtain effective protection in this country once the transitional period is over.
